Word has been spreading like wildfire that Betty White is dead. THIS IS FALSE. OhNoTheyDidn't was trolled.
What happened is that
jerseyfux (ETA: who has now been revealed to be
flaming)got a post about Jeremy Renner approved. They then edited that post so that it showed a photo of Betty with the TMZ breaking news logo on it and a short article saying that she had been found dead. The article was clearly fake, as it mentioned possibilities of foul play and drug abuse, and grandchildren that Betty White does not have. But anyone who wanted to do any further investigating at the "source" was lead to the TMZ homepage which did not feature said article.
Several users who were either socks or friends in on the trolling claimed that they saw the article up on TMZ and it had since been deleted, so it was not the OP's fault. However, TMZ is known for their journalistic integrity. Not only do they rarely report false information, but they would never delete a post - just edit it to provide the correction. One sock/friend provided a screencap as proof; that was proven to be fake when the font used didn't match the one TMZ actually uses.
The post was finally deleted, but by then Betty White was already a worldwide trending topic on Twitter.
The jackals are calling for blood. Don't mess with ONTD's grandma.
ETA: Hello LA Times blog readers! This is kind of surreal!
